Facebook Cleaning Tips

I am using Facebook less and less and in part due to the clutter but this article may just turn that around for me. I recently read an article called “How To Reclaim Your Facebook News Feed – 20 Spring Cleaning Tips” and it was filled with some really great tips. It is definitely worth a read.

Here are some of my own tips on how you can clean your Facebook page to add to the articles 20 tips.

1. If you don’t like the language in a post on your wall by one of the young people you follow (family members or extended family), just hide it by right clicking on the right top of the post. This way you won’t have others see bad language on your page.

2. If you want to unfriend a person, they won’t know you did so, just click the hyperlink on their name to go to their Facebook page and then click the starred friends button on the top right just under the cover photo. The drop down that appears allows you to select how much information to see from this friend as well as a link to unfriend them.

3. Know that every time you like a page, you are allowing them to spam your wall and the wall of your friends if they are following your information – they may or may not see these posts depending on how much information they have subscribed to on following you. But know if they get all your updates if you like the Giant Grocery Store page and they follow all your updates they’ll see Giant’s wall posts on their wall too. Review who you like and purge accordingly. I have found that sometimes I have more posts from page likes in my news feed than I would like. Plus know that if you allow the like and app installation, you are agreeing to share your personal information with this business. Be aware!

4. Don’t Friend people instead choose to subscribe to their updates for greater control. If you have a person who does a lot of gaming on Facebook when you start to get game updates, click into their profile, go to the starred friend button and tick off the things you want to get updates on. You may want to choose only life events.

When it comes to Facebook you are now really in control, but it does take a little tweaking to set the amount of information you want to see.

Facebook Ad Types Explained

We’ve really checked it out!

If you are still in love with Facebook, you may like my short and easy to understand primer on Facebook Advertising. Here’s what you need to know in a nutshell.

  1. You have four ad choice options on Facebook in their pay per click model – web ads, social ads, sponsored stories, and post ads.
  2. Web ads have your own verbiage, super small image about 120 pixels wide and can point to your Facebook page or to your website.
  3. Social ads are automatically generated by Facebook based on subscriber and visitor interactions to your Facebook Business page. They can either be a “Like Us” ad or an ad showing an action a recent visitor to your page took such as leaving a comment, posting to your wall, or other interaction.
  4. There are also post ads and sponsored story ads as well on Facebook and these two ad types will typically have a lower cost than web ads and social ads.
  5. Ads that promote an event have been shown to statistically have the highest cost per click but also the lowest click through rate.

“… the study also notes that Sponsored Story promotions for likes and app usage drive the highest conversion rates. In fact, on average, almost 80 percent of all people who click on Sponsored Story ads that promote Page likes convert to fans, while Sponsored Stories that promote app usage average a 60 percent conversion rate.”

This very interesting data and ad type nuggets are expounded in this online article and it is a good read if you want to learn more about Facebook advertising or see ad type examples.

What’s Happened to Facebook?

Ask any kid or adult what they think about Facebook and you may hear these comments:

  • I’m tired of the game spam.
  • I am not spending much time on Facebook anymore.
  • I am investing my time in face to face contact and moving offline.
  • I think Facebook is in trouble, I just am not interested in the things happening there anymore.
  • I think Facebook is a fad and has had it’s run its course.
  • My newsfeed is boring.
  • I couldn’t live without Facebook.
  • I only use Facebook to logon to sites I want to become a member on as the auto login is easy.
  • I like using the like button.
  • I like to poke people, play games, use the apps.
  • Many of my friends are leaving Facebook to go to Twitter.
  • I like the games, but I am strongly encouraged to use money to buy things on the games.
  • I find it complicated to use and don’t understand how to use it to connect or answer posts on my wall.

These are just a few comments from the people I polled for this post. Do you have a comment you want to add about Facebook? As for me I think Facebook is still a great place for businesses to be, but only until the next big thing comes along.

Microsoft Updates Name to Bing

This was announced recently: “…Our small and medium business brand is changing from “Microsoft Advertising” to “Bing.”” Although it appears that the advertising product will still be called adCenter, it appears that Microsoft is working to brand itself more consistently with the Bing brand. There may be additional strategies at play such as differentiating Microsoft’s online presence from its software presence. As to that, only time will tell.

In the meantime understand that Bing is much more than advertising on the Bing.com search engine. Bing results and Bing advertising is shown on the Yahoo, Bing, and even the Facebook platform. Of additional importance just this past week was Bing’s announcement that throughout the summer they will be rolling out a very tight search integration with Facebook.

From the images released, it appears that when you will search on Bing in the future, Facebook friends faces and comments about a product or place will appear on the left sidebar of your Bing search results page.

All in all, both statements are big news and let us know that in the bigger schemes of search there is some serious consolidation happening behind the scenes between the key social players like Facebook and Microsoft now known as Bing.
