Google Says Mobile is a Key Micro Moment

I recently attended a Google Partner seminar online on Mobile Tracking and Reporting for Google AdWords. There were some interesting nuggets that the Google Staff shared with us from the extensive research that Google has done on mobile and its value in the conversion funnel.

Here are a few nuggets I want to share today on mobile’s importance in the funnel:

1. Keyword search queries used on mobile searches will be shorter and more general.

2.  Mobile activity accounts for strong pre-conversion research.

3. Mobile activity is about looking to be inspired and typically the user is not ready to convert, at least not just yet.

4. Mobile sessions as part of the conversion funnel are typically done early in the day (before noon) with conversions taking place later in the day and typically on a desktop or tablet.

5. Due to mobile activity Google states that desktop  pageviews and time on the site are lower, but in reality much of this activity has just simply moved to a mobile device.  You may still be getting the same activity from users, but now it is difficult to see in Google Analytics as it happens from multiple devices.

6. Google is strongly recommending advertisers to use cross device conversions as a part of their conversion metric by enabling this as a column detail to better understand how users are converting across multiple devices. Although these are estimated numbers, Google feels that they have a 99.9% surety.

If you watch your numbers in Google Analytics, it is not unusual to see typical website numbers such as 1.1 minutes on the site versus previous numbers last year of 2 to 3 minutes on the site. It is not uncommon to see pageviews down from a year ago of 2 to 5 pages down to 1.2 pages per session. It seems to me that Google has “nailed” what has happened on the web. Don’t discount mobile to your business and marketing equation. Although you may not be getting conversions, you are getting micro moments that lead to sales. Cut out the mobile portion and your sales will very possibly suffer.

Are You Cultivating Success in AdWords?

Picture of a blooming violet.
Growing AdWords is like tending violets or a garden.

Managing an AdWords account is like gardening. Some people just know how to make things grow and bloom and others are clueless.

I consider AdWords accounts like gardens. To be successful and grow leads for a client, you’ve got to work the soil of an AdWords account. You’ve got to prune off the keyword and ad group branches that are sapping strength. You’ve got to water the account regularly with new keywords and new ad text to keep things fresh and growing. You’ve got to monitor growth and adjust your tactics to cause accounts to blossom with leads.

After having re-certified again last Saturday to maintain my Google Partner status and my AdWords Certified Professional status, I am the “master gardener” you’ll want to have on your side to be cultivating your AdWords lead generation garden.

Give me a call to find out why our services and my knowledge and expertise are the tools you’ll want to help grow your Fredericksburg, Virginia business with Google AdWords.

AdWords Express Gets a Thumbs Down Rating

Thumbs Down for AdWords Express
Thumbs Down for AdWords Express

It used to be that AdWords Express was easy enough for a business owner to set up and maintain and the results were pretty good for low budget accounts. But lately, Google seems to be delivering untargeted results.

Here’s an example. A client asked me to set up an AdWords Express account. They wanted to take a low budget route to get exposure on AdWords. Typically for clients with a $200 per 30 day ad spend who were okay with a 15 mile ad delivery radius around their business location, this seemed like a very low cost way to get fair results.

Now, Google has nearly totally automated keyword selection in AdWords Express accounts and if you really look at the 27 pages of keywords that Google is showing for one ad, you’d be shocked at what Google is delivering clicks on. The phrases and your ability to control what your ad shows on is now marginal at best.

With these changes, Google has automated the process, but at the expense of quality. On set up you can select one category from Google predetermined list, then select five or six predetermined terms by clicking a check box, but this is when the trouble starts. Google extrapolates high activity keywords for your account so if you selected permanent eyebrows Google now shows your ads for terms like semi-permanent makeup, eyebrow makeup, and cosmetics. Yikes!

Because of Google’s delivery change and inability to once and for all control the search phrases – ones you delete keep popping back into the account, I’ll be changing my program and recommending that only do it yourselfers who have loads of time on their hands use AdWords Express. The lack of controls is very concerning and makes me give it a thumbs down!
