Solving a Blog Hack Problem

Even the very best website and most vigilant webmaster can have their blog hacked. It just happens. Typically the higher you are in the organic search results the more attempts will be made to hack your blog.

Why does someone want to hack your site?

It is typically for these reasons:

  1. Parlay on your high placement and traffic to bleed off your search engine capital to a black hat optimizers list of sites that need “SEO Juice”.
  2. Parlay on your website placement and traffic to spew malware to your site visitors to turn visitors’ computers into spam bots.
  3. Use your unprotected site as a launch pad for black hat optimization doorway pages.

There is simply nothing personal about the situation, it is simply a crime of convenience. If you are not secure, you are a target. In some cases the security problem may be on your web host’s side, but in other cases the issue is on your website’s side.

I have successfully used several WordPress plug-ins on a number of client sites to lock out the bad guys, even ones who some how seem to keep getting in. Here are three of the plug-ins that I really like to use that help to beef up your security after you have thoroughly cleaned your blog and website from a hack attack.

WP File Monitor Plus
If you are repeatedly being hacked with this plug-in, you will instantly know which core files need to be replaced. The application can email or send you a text message.

Login Lockdown
Limit attempted intrusions by locking out bots and spiders who are testing your admin and trying to crack your password. You choose what settings to lock them out with. Your MySQL database will keep a list of attempts and lockouts so you can see the date of intrusion attempts.

WP Admin Renamer Extended
I love this one. First create a new admin file with a super secure name and password. Then rename your existing admin using this plug-in. But don’t stop there. Go back in and set your old admin user as a subscriber only; effectively locking out the bad guys that even if they can get back in they can’t make any changes.

These are great starts, but be aware that if a hacker really, really wants to get in they can be extremely difficult to keep out. My motto is make it very hard for them to get in and time consuming that they simply want to move elsewhere to do their dirty work.

Keep an Eye on Your Website and Blog for Hidden Spam Parasites With This Tool

In today’s world, you’ve got to be proactive about protecting your online search engine capital. One way to keep an eye on your website and blog are to routinely review both for hidden parasitic spam hacks that will sap your search engine placement and could actually end up getting you banned (temporarily) on Google.com. Here is one tool you may want to do a few scans with to make sure that you are clean.

The tool is called Unmask Parasites. This free online tools scans a few random pages on the URL you input and then gives you a pretty fair report on activity, links, and if your site is carrying parasites. It is important if you feel you have a problem that you not just scan your home page. Do some directory scans as well to see if deeper in your site you have a problem.

Additionally I highly recommend that you review at least monthly, your Google Webmaster Control Panel and review the keywords that Google is finding on your website. If you are finding a prevalence of casino, gaming, or mortgage related keywords, your site has been hacked and needs a thorough cleaning.

Although Unmask Parasites may not find an all hidden parasites as it only scans random files, using it in conjunction with the Google Webmaster Control Panel will allow you to keep tabs on the security of your site and work to monitor others cracking in and using your site to funnel hidden spam links forcing your placement down in the organic search results.

When Does Blogging Work For You?

This is my candid opinion, blogging works best when WordPress is installed on your website server under your website domain in a folder called blog with a URL that looks like this: http://www.MyDomain.com/blog.

Any other variation does not give you the links or SEO juice that you want and need. So what do I mean by SEO juice.?Well here’s just one example in regard to inbound link generation. We’ve been blogging for a client for about one year three days a week. I was just in on the Google Webmaster control panel and Google is showing that 500 sites are linking in to his blog.

Linking in is one of the really big perks that blogging consistently delivers for a website. Here are some other success stories: for another site there are 1,400 sites linking to the blog, for another 537, and for my own website I have 2,413 sites linking to my blog.

Blogging is just incredibly useful when it comes to getting links back to your website the best part is that if you have good blog content the links all happens on their own without your involvement. But, you only get the benefit of the links by having your blog properly configured as in the first paragraph.

Links are just one of the factors that help with organic search engine placement. Blogging is very effective when it comes to improving organic search placement by increasing the number of website pages, keyword density, and inbound links.
