How to Add Location Specificity to Your Website

I am in the process of building a new website for a client and wanted to share a few of my own tips for adding location specificity to your website. Although these are very simple tips, you would be amazed at how many web designers, who are not SEO-focused, will forget to use them.

1. Put your address, phone number, and locations in the code never in images. Search engines cannot read images and do not place any emphasis on what you have in the alt tag. Style these items with CSS don’t take the lazy route by creating them as images.

2. Make sure your phone number is at the top of each and every page and make the phone number clickable using this html tag: <a href=”tel:301-705-7303″>Phone 301-705-7303</a>. When you use code such as this for phone numbers in your content, smartphones will allow these links to be click to call and even browsers and tablets will try to open Skype or other phone calling application with a click.

3. Make sure you include the full address including spelled out state and zip code in the footer of all pages. I even go a step further and note the service counties if there are only several. Don’t do huge lists of cities or counties as Google does not like this approach, but a very small list delineating your service area to readers is appropriate.

4. On your contact page, make sure to embed a map from Google Maps. You can create this custom linkable image from within Google Maps and use the <iframe> code to insert it. This gives visual cues to readers and also a link that can be followed to your exact location for search engines. I have found many sites don’t include their physical location on their contact page; I think that this is a mistake, and unless you are working from a home office location you may want to correct that.

5. Consider on your about page giving more details about your service area. For pest control professionals we have found that a service listing with unique pages built for their important city locations may give the placement that they need in a town or city that they would like to place organically in.

Received the Google Mobile Notice – How Do I Fix It

Image of a responsive website on multiple devices.
Make sure you set the viewport for your site to display it properly on multiple devices.

If you have received the Google notice that your website is not mobile friendly and yet you do not have the budget right now to rebuild your website AND you don’t want to have your traffic lowered because of the issue, what can you do?

There are a few services available that will scan your existing site and allow you to drag and drop files in their editor to make a responsive website. Even web hosts have gotten into the action with website templates that are integrated into their hosting platforms.

Although these simplified templates do not allow for a rich, interactive, and custom site, they are good alternatives that are relatively easy albeit fairly time consuming to work with.

Some sites that you may want to check out if you are a do it yourselfer are:

DudaMobile – has mobile friendly as well as responsive designs

WIX – just be careful of the design as not all are really responsive

Shopify has some nice designs to consider

Webflow is even a consideration.

Of course if you want greater control over your design and content, or simply do not have enough time to do this yourself, we have a very nice turnkey program for responsive websites for you to check out and try out online.

Google Starts to Warn Website Owners on Mobile Viewing Issues

Google Notice on Mobile
You do not want to get this email from Google!

You do not want to get email from Google – really!  Just this week Google started posting in the Webmaster Control Panel and emailing website owners notifications like this one.

“Google systems have tested 25 pages from your site and found that 96% of them have critical mobile usability errors. The errors on these 24 pages severely affect how mobile users are able to experience your website. These pages will not be seen as mobile-friendly by Google Search, and will therefore be displayed and ranked appropriately for smartphone users.”

Seeing as this site has only 25 pages, that means that Google is in essence saying “you’ve got big problems!”

Earlier in the year, Google warned that they would be evaluating websites for mobile friendliness and they also stated that this notification such as this one in this blog post would be the first step. The second step, Google stated,  would be to mark the site in the Google mobile search index as not viewable on a mobile phone.  Yikes, that sounds like a soft penalty.

Google also alluded to a third step which to many webmasters such as myself appears to be a organic penalty. Although Google may be slow to take this last action, they are clearly working their plan starting just this past week.

Many legacy websites are simply not responsive designed and are not mobile friendly. The site that received this notification is over 8 years old. If your site was not built in the last two years, expect to be getting notification of problems too.

I invite you to review our prices and programs to help you move your legacy website to a responsive site that Google will love. Find out more today.

Blogging is Valuable for Driving Traffic to Your Website

It is a mistake to feel that blogging is dead. Hands down one of the very best things you can do for your business website is to have a blog that is updated regularly.

Here’s an interesting situation that illustrates how blogging benefits you. I had a client who said she was stopping blogging as she simply did not see the value. We went to Bing.com together as part of our conversation to review her placement on the search engines and there on the page for her top keywords several of her blog posts appeared. After seeing that her blog was an entry point into her website, she decided that maybe she had misjudged the part that blogging played in her overall marketing strategy and decided to increase her blogging frequency.

When done properly blogging provides not only value for site visitors, it can become an entry point into your website and may even funnel traffic into your services pages. But, blogging needs to be engaging, interesting, and on-topic.

If you are looking for a service firm to write quality content for your own blog, I invite you to visit our blogging services page to review pricing and writing samples.
